Martin Turjak
Ph.D. student
Department of Biology
University of Ljubljana, Slovenia
group for Zoology and Speleobiology
Hi, my name is Martin Turjak and I am a Ph.D. student of Biology at Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Here is my CV (in pdf format). I work in a research group that works mainly on systematics, phylogenetics and phylogeography of subterranean and other fauna. With my mentor I am developing a new “Hennigian” phylogenetic method based on direct grouping by apomorphy. Currently I am implementing the algorithm in a C++ based computer program. I’m also comparing, studying and using different other phylogenetic methods and software (based on parsimony, distance methods, maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference and others).
I’m also developing some online applications. We are building an online available database of the genus Niphargus (Amphipoda, Crustacea); by now there are checklists and a morphological database available at http://niphargus.info. I’m also working on an interactive determination key (PHP application) and a molecular and phylogeographic database (in MySQL).
My computer skils:
- Fluent in major OS (Linux, Windows, OS X)
- Computer languages (C++, Java, PHP, HTML, XML, SQL, LaTeX, CSS and R)
- Experience with software (to mentione a few: Adobe suite, Arlequin, Gimp, Mega, MrBayes, Ms Office suite, MySQL, OpenOffice, PAML, PAUP*, PHYLIP, SPSS …)
- Programming, web design, mathematics, graphics, phylogenetic analyses, statistical analyses …
My interests:
- Research (Phylogenetics, Evolutionary theory, Botany, Mycology, Herpetology, Entomology, Environmental studies, Mathematics)
- Art (drawing, music - playing trombone)
- Photography
- Sports (mountaineering, cycling, team sports, squash)
- Cooking and enology
Some phylogenetics related lectures and courses I attended:
Molecular Evolution, Theoretical Biology and Evolution, Bioinformatics, Systematic Zoology, Systematic Botany, Biostatistics and Biogeography.
I graduated in Biology (Systematics and Ecology) with a systematic botanical thesis. I’m also participating in a phylogenetic journal club (where we discus different phylogenetic articles).
Some (bio)computer science related lectures and courses I attended:
Programming (Java), Computer applications in biology, Information technology in data analyses (XML and R), Introductory computer science / Software concepts (operating systems, LaTeX, HTML and different program packages), Bioinformatics (databases, MS Access, SQL, BLAST…), Statistics (SPSS and R)
